Stanislav's Cottage, Darkon to Lowsofte, New Lanark

The group wake up in mixed conditions the morning after the attack. Stanislav hasn't recovered very well and is very poorly and Adelinde seems almost drunk, claiming she had been poisoned. Eventually the unconscious woman makes an appearence.

Seems her name is Marie of Mordent and she happened to be Stanislav's half-sister. She also informs that apparently the assailants from the night before are part of something called the Hands of Fate and work for a mysterious figure referred to as Him.

Eventually they part company and head south towards New Lanark, finally reaching a sign post pointing to Lowsofte, they agree to remain in each others company and travel south. As they do, they enter the old misty lands to find them clean and clear of the thick mists, everything seems much happier and nicer and Lilya runs through the fields happily chasing sticks thrown by Abigail.

Until the yapping stops, only to be replaced with a pained whining.

Lowsofte, New Lanark

Stanislav and Abigail decide to head back to look for Lilya once they're away from the danger zone and Richard, whilst hurt, is determined to stay with Abigail. After Stanislav provides some better treatment for Richard, the trio head off, leaving Adelinde with the three prisoners.

Adelinde then speaks to them for a bit and eventually agrees to release them under certain terms and conditions and they're extremely thankful. She then attempts to lie her way in to the manor house, but frankly she's a terribly liar and just as one of the Falkovnian soldiers is soften to her, she makes a terrible mistake.

Fleeing on a wounded Gallahad, she pushes the faithful beast as far as it can manage before it simply collapses and she's left with little choice of what to do with him. Soon enough she finds herself entering her hometown and she rests for the night, before she's spotted by a town sergeant the next morning and finds herself being escorted to Castle Lanark.

Castle Lanark, New Lanark

Adelinde barely sleeps, trying to come to terms with the events of the night, finding herself a prisoner in her own room. Eventually Bishop Clanwell joins her and she is very suspicious, yet when he makes her a certain offer, she cheers up quickly.

The very next day she finds Samuel Jonasson and Second Lieutenant Hawkes have been released from the castle dungeons and finds herself sitting with the elite of New Lanark, discussing politics and other stately affairs.

The discussions go well enough, although Lord Sember marches from the room clearly annoyed and soon enough she expresses her dislike for him to Samuel Jonasson. Later that evening, she finds herself sitting to have dinner with Stanislav's half-sister, Marie of Mordent.

Mordentshire, Mordent

After leaving Abigail in Lekar, Stanislav travels south to meet up with his family. He meets a quiet man called Alred he leads him a few days through the countryside, before they stop at an old manor house in a state of disrepair.

He enters cautiously and is soon having coffee with his old, mean grandmother and his confident, yet dark uncle. They tell him about the Circle of the Raven, he tells them about the events in Mortigny and they tell him he has a choice to make if he wants to join the circle.

He speaks to his grandmother first, then his uncle Sirius, whom reveals his dark paths to him. Undecided and unsure what to do, he sits outside at night with the lame Lilya, when suddenly his half-sister Marie exits from the woods and they have a loving conversation, where she is delighted as he tells her he wants to learn her magic style.

Marie says it'll have to be after the weekend, as she is leaving the next day to go visit Adelinde, a heart full of hope and Stanislav wishes her the best of luck and that he won't say anything until monday, as to not hurt his grandmother and uncle's feelings.

Old Manor House, Mordent

Stanislav helps his uncle Sirius with some experiments in his cottage, as his sister and grandmother is away. Whilst looking for some black cloth, Stanislav notices three bone-framed portraits inside his cupboard. When enquiring about them, Sirius suddenly turns as he's informed one of them is faded away and unrecognisable. It suddenly seems Marie is in danger and both men quickly move to find her location and prepare to travel their as soon as possible.

Stanislav is suddenly whisked away with Sirius, as the older and more experienced magi uses dark magic to whisk them through the shadows, passing many lands before they arrive in New Lanark, outside Castle Lanark. There is brewing trouble outside as the castle guard, shocked at the appearance of Sirius keep their swords out and for a time it seems the two magi are about to destroy them, before a guard rushes back and they're granted entrance.

The two meet Adelinde Donncha in an upstairs room and they almost demand to know where Marie is. Adelinde is upset as she has to inform them that Marie is dead, murdered by His assassins. Adelinde offers to show them to her resting place and Sirius seems to think there may be trouble, as her body wasn't burnt.

They head to the Donncha family tomb, leaving the royal guard some distance away and venture inside after some vandalism and desecration before finding the wrapped remains of Marie. Sirius informs them that her life essence is low and they must act, before he informs them that assailants are here for him.

Sirius leaves and an explosion instantly rocks the catacombs. Stanislav carries the body as Adelinde leads through the hot, humid passage ways, before they're attacked by two deathless assassins. Stanislav receives a terrible wound as his magic seems to be uneffective against them, yet Adelinde manages to dispatch the pair and they rush up the steps, past countless bodies, as sounds of death and battle scream from above.

They get out of the top, before Adelinde is shot by a musket, the round penetrating her armour and step outside, Stanislav in a beastial form, to witness Sirius tear three men to pieces with purple-black beams, before he vanishes in a cloud of darkness and another explosion rings out, sending scattered burning corpses and limbs raining down on the chaotic battlefield.

The Royal Guard attempt to protect the Duchess and manage to get her breastplate off, yet her stomach is punctured and there is blood leaking everywhere. Stanislav drops himself on to a life form and begins to suck it's life out with dark magic, as Sirius appears next to Adelinde, a near death Falkovnian soldier in his hand and heals her wound with more dark magic, before one of her protectors barrels him to the ground.

The battle ends and Stanislav and Adelinde head back to the castle with the three remaining Royal Guard, leaving Sirius on the road to the family tomb clutching the body of Marie. At the castle Adelinde tries to convince Stanislav to leave the dead Marie, but he wishes to bring Marie back to life.

Stanislav and Sirius end up back at the cottage in the woods, before laying Marie out and having a frankly conversation. They finally agree to hold Marie's essence within a crystal shard until Stanislav can make his choice. The dark path and ability with Sirius to bring Marie back from the dead, or the water path, as Marie was.

Darkon
The Settlement of the First Revolutionary War and Aftermath May 1802 DC

Towards the back end of the 1802 the opposing sides in the conflict settled in for the winter, each expecting all hell to pay after the spring melt which would make the movement of large bodies of men possible again. The rebels in Martira Bay continued to train up some kind of an army from scratch with the aid of Falkovnian weaponry, the Royalists once more trawling the expanses of Darkon for yet more men to press into the King's new army.

Out of the blue events took a dramatic turn near the end of the year after the revolt of a new town, Sidnar in the east. What followed is mostly rumour but reports all seem to agree on some basic facts. After failing to quell the revolt the guards of the town abandoned their posts, but locked the gates to the city walls before they did so. An hour later on bright sunny evening, a unholy red light appeared in the sky and burned anyone unfortunate enough to see it. Tens of thousands perished, but the true horror was yet to come.

While most died where they stood some were reborn as some kind of living dead, mutated in horrible ways. These creatures proceeded to hunt and kill whomever that remained. The survivor count from it all was in the mere hundreds. No-one knows who did it but the event coming so soon after the rebellion spoke volumes.

In the spring as both sides warmed up for a resumption of war rumours began to mount about secret negotiations that might avert full civil war. The rumours were confirmed as true when a venue was announced for talks on an estate around the line of control. The discussions took almost two weeks and in the end a deal was struck for the negotiating teams to try and take back and sell to their sides.

The revolutionaries were badly split and nearly erupted in their own civil war, many regarding it as a sell out. The view that to continue to fight now risks annihilation held the day and the treaty was ratified. It left the King on the throne, Darkon as a monarchy intact but the concessions to the people were still significant.

Key points

I. All currently rebelling lands will remain semi independent, will remain a part of Darkon but will be allowed to appoint their own administrations and make local laws. They will pay taxes towards the defence of the southern border.
II. They will be allowed their own militias, which will nominally be the kings men, but in practice will be loyal firstly to the local revolutionary council.
III. The rest of Darkon will recieve a liberalisation of many brutal laws, along with the creation of a Parliament elected by everyone in the land who is male, over 25 and owns property.
IV. Parliament swear fealty to the King but may advise him, it must approve his budget and approves all new taxes.
V. Anyone arrested in the Kingdom has the right to public trial in front of a jury of their peers. Confessions extracted through torture are no longer admissible as evidence. Commoners have the same right to seek justice under the law as Nobles.

Final territorial settlement. Blue areas to remain semi autonomous. Falkovnian forces withdrawn to their pre-war positions. Sidnar destroyed.

D&D 3.5 - Ravenloft - Page 2 Darkonpeacemay1802

So, it remains to be seen if this is the end of the trouble or only the beginning. The wise think its most likely the latter. While the revolution tries to find some way of stopping this new weapon of horror and the royalists firm up their grip on power. And both, of course, with one eye on the ever present threat from their neighbours to the south.

Castle Lanark, New Lanark

The Winter Festival is in motion, as Stanislav and Abigail travel from the south at invitation of the Duchess of New Lanark. Everyone ends up in the dining hall where pleasant chat and festivities take place.

Stanislav make rather a mess of dancing with Abigail, tearing Lady Evina Donncha's dress to her fury, but everyone attempts to smooth the embarrassment over with the young man.

The evening is upset slightly when one Duke Mathias Drakov arrives and makes himself more than noticeable, an utterly unforgettable individual. He proceeds to insult New Lanark, insult the Duchess herself and slap Stanislav in the mouth, all in twenty seconds before proceeding outside with the Duchess to insult and belittle her some more with some added groping.

The evening is further interrupted as a newly hired Darkanese guard attempts to assassinate the Duchess and only for the bravery and quick acting of Richard Brandt does he fail to do so.

After being rushed off upstairs by everyone, Stanislav and Abigail begin to attempt a pitch towards the Duchess, it seems both of them have mutually exclusive offers for the Duchess to consider on behalf of New Lanark, but before they can finish, horrible news that Sara, Adelinde's hand maiden, has been raped filters through the castle and all the fireworks go off at once.

The Boritsi Estate, Borca

The group cover up and leave Castle Lanark after camping out in the quaint, old fashioned land for the winter to pass and Adelinde surprises the group by heading north, inside of south. She leads the group through thick mists that curl at the base of the mountains that block New Lanark from Darkon and to everyone's surprise, suddenly they find themselves in a wildly different and distant land.

Soon enough they're met by Ivana Boritsi herself, the woman they have wished to meet, it seems in a matter of hours, they have managed to travel to Borca, months of travel away.

Ivana invites the group to stay with her for the week so she can get to know them, Richard instantly getting on the wrong side of the beautiful young woman.

The group spend time outside by a pool, eating fabulous meals. Some horse riding takes place, a little tennis; Adelinde and Richard crowned champions of the world. Richard and Abigail join Ivana in her milk baths; Adelinde refusing to go, and they help her with a little problem. The next day there is a spot of hunting and after killing a mother deer, Richard shows mercy to the two fawns yet manages to please and upset Ivana all at once.

The next day dinner is arranged and they talk frankly, before Ivana leaves the group with concubines, whom Abigail and Richard take full advantage of, Richard in fact taking complete advantage of. Adelinde leaves though and talks to Ivana in the gardens, managing to embarrass herself greatly.

The next day Adelinde, Richard and Ivana ride out to a setup military camp and watch the range of weaponry Ivana offers with mixed emotions, but awe all around. She then explains the terms of her deal.

Krezk, Barovia. The Battle of Krezk

The group leaves the Boritsi Estate in Borca, Adelinde and Richard both receiving departing gifts from Miss Ivana Boritsi and along with two horses for Abigail and Richard and fresh fruit, bread, meat and wines for the trip into Barovia, they depart. They travel east between the two great rivers and up in to the mountains. Within a day, the weather has significantly worsened and the land now appears more like New Lanark, then neighbouring Borca.

They cross the site of a battle, or perhaps massacre, where their investigations in to the brutal killings only turn up that there is perhaps a missing child, a girl likely. They stack the bodies in to the travelling caravan and burn it, before continuing. Leaving the mountains they travel between the great and dark woods of Barovia before crossing a gypsy camp and it turns out to be Rosetta, whom Stanislav and Adelinde had previously met.

Abigail is handed a letter by Rosetta and the group is offered to travel with them to meet Rosetta's mother, Enya. Yet as Adelinde introduces herself, things grow immediately tense. They all depart soon after, the atmosphere somewhat repaired and the group travel in to Krezk, determined to find this Borcan spy, Leila and learn what they can of the Lord of Krezk.

Castle Lanark, New Lanark. The Wedding of Abigail and Stanislav.

The girls and boys meet again, brought together for this joyous occasion. A night out on the town and the wedding itself the next day, only the odd spooky occurrence and some unwelcome guests mar an otherwise perfect event.

The next day does not pass nearly as well, Richard shoots down a Falkovnian Major in a duel and Victor callously murders his young aide de camp in cold blood. The number of witnesses presents a problem and there is little agreement on what to do next.

Abandoned Lighthouse, Windy Island
D&D 3.5 - Ravenloft - Page 2 Lighthouse

The characters are whisked by some malign force through the mists to a desolate island. They explore the lighthouse which is the sole structure and discover it is haunted, by what though is unknown.

Investigations as to the contents of the lighthouse start to reveal shocking things, a picture of an aged Victor in his sixties with a grown up daughter and grand-daughter. Abigail sees someone outside, is it Sophia?, of the picture and Victors daughter? She seems confused when they talk to her and she goes off to search for Danielle, her little girl. They lose her on the top floor and consider what they've learned in shock.

Richard makes an observation as to the dark hair and eyes of Sophia, much different to that of Martinique, and claims there is a resemblance to Adelinde. War commences, angry words and deeds and Victor tells Marti in a moment of candour that he wishes to leave her, as he desires children she cannot provide him.

The Lamordian girl is inconsolable and takes her own life in an upstairs room, cradled gently as she passes by Abigail while Victor looks on in horror.

Once gone something very odd happens to her body, leading to the question, was Martinique even human?

Abandoned Lighthouse, Windy Island

The grief with Martinique's passing still fresh the group struggle to bring Victor back to the land of the living. Strange and dangerous ghosts trouble them at night, one of which sucks Stanislav into a wall and he is not seen again.

They meet Sophia again after burying Martinique in the Rose family plot, the apparent eventual resting place of both Victor and his Daughter. She speaks cryptically and clearly wishes to not discuss certain things and the party decide to explore the flooded basement.

Down there Richard nearly drowns and they are attacked by an mysterious diver who nearly brains two out of three in the dark. They find it was guarding a back chamber, in which they finally discover the tragedy behind all this and the source of the haunting.

They put it right as best they can, burying Victor's as yet unborn granddaughter with Martinique and the rest of the family under stormy skies.

Nevuchar City, Darkon, 1878DC
Seventy-two years in the future

Blown ashore on their rowing boat they find a strange modern city and the characters realise they are still out of their proper time.
D&D 3.5 - Ravenloft - Page 2 City2.jpg

They discover it is a bleak time in the history of the world. All that is south beyond Darkon has as far as anyone knows already fallen to the darkness. A meeting, apparently arranged by the future self of Abigail (103 years old) gives them some clues how to get back, and they buy train tickets for the southern border.

Their train is ambushed by Dark Ones, the very same as they encountered before and only the self sacrifice of a group of brave soldiers allows them to escape. Going south from the last stop of the train line, they encounter a careful pair of survivors who Richard will not trust, he refuses to disarm in exchange for shelter on their farm.

In the morning, all three then set off on foot for the border and discover it is in flux, boiling with unnatural storm and cloud.
D&D 3.5 - Ravenloft - Page 2 Cloud

Bravely, desperate perhaps to get away from this nightmarish apocalypse they walk into the could, clinging on to the things they most wish to return for.

Castle Lanark, 1806DC
The present day

The walk through the cloud deposits the characters in the Lanarkian wilderness, to their vast relief. They still have no way of knowing when they are though.
D&D 3.5 - Ravenloft - Page 2 Wilderness1

They travel on foot for most of the day until they reach the shores of Lough Erskine and trace it around until they reach Castle Lanark, finding it in good repair, bathed in glorious sunshine and apparently back in their own time frame.
D&D 3.5 - Ravenloft - Page 2 Castle2

The characters find Adelinde and Sara, who have been childminding and they impart the awful news about Marti and Stanislav. Harsh words of blame are spoken between Abigail and Richard and when they come together to discuss the mysterious box they were given by the future self of Abi it nearly comes to blows.

They discover the box contains examples of a disease which is destined to ravage the future, suspended in yellow powder and sealed in glass bottles. A letter explains it has been given to them so they might now have perhaps decades to begin early work on a cure. After a stand off over what to do with its lethal contents they eventually compromise to a degree and Richard takes it off to be stored in the castle vault until Victor might find somewhere better.

http://mikey.fastmail.us/ravenloft190712.htm

Epilogue

That night, Luvek and Victor search for a disturbingly missing Richard, who it turns out never went to the vault to store the strange box. A search of the castle reveals no trace of the solider and all is a mystery before the sound of a gunshot down in the town has guards moving for the scene. They find Sara, shot in the back of the head and barely breathing, left to die on the road it seems and wearing no shoes. A few hundred yards away, with all the lights on is the Falkovnian embassy, a group of riders apparently only recently departed.

In search Richard, a chase is made on the deputation heading back to Falkovnia and a tense stand off is had at a bridge between Lanarkish dragoons and Vlad's cavalry. There is no sign of Richard amongst them however and unwilling to start a war they are allowed to proceed on their way. As the days after this roll on it becomes clear Richard must have defected with his deadly prize, probably shooting Sara for good measure when he did so for reasons no-one might ever know.

Sara's condition is poor, the bullet entered the back of the neck and lodged in the base of her skull. Father Turner, an amateur medic at the best of times can do nothing but keep her alive. Lacking any alternatives word is put out in town for anyone who might think they are able to help and a slightly controversial lady named Collie emerges as a known traditional healer in the area and is brought up to the castle at the instance of Evina Donncha, currently in charge.

She removes the bullet from her skull and patches up Sara. A few days later she regains conciousness and to everyone's delight is able to move her arms and legs immediately. She makes a astonishingly quick recovery under the care of this mysterious woman and is soon more or less herself again. She does though, refuse to say a lot about the Richard incident, only that it was he that shot her and that she had no idea about the location of the box, having never seen it herself. It does seem clear to her though, that when she saw him it was Richard's intention to return to Falkovnia.

Collie, for her trouble asked to stay on by Lady Evina on a temporary basis due to her clear talent for this sort of thing and begins to become a fairly familiar figure in the castle, although it seems her preference is to overnight on her farm, a little out of town.

Unknown, 1806 to Darkon, 1780? 1778? 1786?

Adelinde, Abigail and Collie find themselves waking in a hostile and terrifying environment, none of them possessing any memory of the last forty-eight hours, let alone the last several weeks. After several horrible experiences in a dank and dark basement, the trio of nude girls head upstairs and fine themselves in a peaceful and well decorated manner, yet they follow the distance shouts of Sara? Victor? An unknown child?

The trio are assorted by horrors, before Abigail vanishes not once, but twice and they eventually meet Victor after a young girl, whom seems unperturbed by what has gone on, in fact completely unknowing to the ongoing, but agrees to aid Adelinde and Collie with their *bizarre* request.

Soon the duo, after events, wake in separate rooms yet are soon joined together, before breaking in to the room of a young sickly girl, the same room that nearly killed them the night before. The girl demands they leave and they do. They both spend the day, after breakfast, examining the rest of the estate, including a teenage boy building a snowman and the empty stables, before heading back to the estate to speak to both a young maid and then Mrs. Petrev, the housekeeper.

Tschorkov Estate, Darkon

Adelinde and Collie search for the missing priest that apparently no one can remember nor name but their search reveals little extra information. They however decide to head in to the study to do some research, both turning up a little before they agree to use a ouija board to try to connect the restless spirits inside the home.

The ouija board doesn't exactly go as planned...

A week or so later, the group find themselves in the comfort of II Aluk, in the home of the Count of II Aluk. They meet Chana, his aide, whilst he is taking care of some business and later they head to meet the Count himself, or Adelinde does at least, as Collie remains outside with Sara and speaks to an old friend of Victor's.

II Aluk, Darkon

Adelinde, Collie and Sara prepare for the evening ball that is being arranged in Count Dimitri's II Aluk estate. They soon enough head downstairs and join the ball, before not too long later Collie strikes an arrogant young man, whom turns out to be the Duke of Mayvin.

Chana attempts to resolve the incident but fails and everything looks to be going south before Count Dimitri gets himself involved to smooth out the mess, yet it still goes further south. The group retreat upstairs until news reaches they, via Chana, that Duke Putin of Mayvin has been removed from the presence, at what cost who knows.

The group head back downstairs and everything is much calmer. A little later Chana announces the arrival of Naranbaatar Khan, Lord of Nova Vaasa along with his entourage. As Narabaatar and Adelinde begin to talk, Collie notices a old man hanging by a door that she thinks she recognises, even though she surely does no really member meeting him.

Adelinde has her conversation, whilst Collie and Sara follow the figure and poke around in the backrooms.

II Aluk, Darkon

The group wakes, has a little breakfast and meets with Chana again. They agree to go out to do a little exploring and shopping, and then attend a wine tasting opening on behalf of Count Dimitri.

After the shopping, the group gets a bite to eat in a quaint Darkon restaurant, everything is fairly normally until Collie supplies the group with some special mushrooms, the cautious Sara guilty coerced in to eating a whole one.

Things then get a little out of hand and wine tasting goes completely off the list of activities.
