Background
Lars was born and raised on a modestly prosperous farm on the isle of Moray. As the third-born son, he stood no chance of inheriting anything of worth from his father's estate. Thus, young Lars' options were few: learn a trade, join the faith, or seek adventure in the ranks of the local militia. Lacking in both brains and spirituality, he enlisted in the Duke of Moray's levies. Lars excelled in the martial arts and developed a distinguished career, particularly after nearly dying in the act of saving his liege lord from an assassination attempt. Recognized for his abilities, the grateful Duke promoted Lars to be his personal bodyguard. His tenure as ducal protector was a successful one until his master, elderly yet hale beyond his years, died suddenly and suspiciously. He was promptly succeeded by his nephew, his sole remaining heir who had been absent from Moray until the day after the Duke's passing. Frustrated by his suspicions behind his master's death, Lars was resigned to returning to the simple life of the solider. However, he received an unexpected windfall: a recommendation for service in the house of the royal family. The recommendation, jointly orchestrated by the new Duke and the old Duke's widow, stipulated a single condition to the low-born soldier: continued loyalty to the Duchy of Moray.
